Planning

How far ahead to book Lauterbrunnen

For summer, book about four months ahead. August by April, July by March. Five seasons of our own booking records, and what they say about timing a trip.

Calendar/When to book

For summer, book about four months ahead. August by April, July by March. That is not a rule of thumb, it is what happened across five summers of our own bookings here: 1,038 stays and 3,374 nights.

Two dates that break the rule

Lauberhorn week, mid-January. The World Cup downhill fills Wengen and the valley below it. Rooms covering those dates are booked roughly twice as far ahead as the rest of January, and some of ours go a year out. Regulars rebook as they are leaving. If you want the race, treat it like August, not like winter. See the Lauberhorn page for dates and tickets.

The first of August. Swiss National Day, with fireworks off the cliffs. Stays covering it are booked about a month further ahead than the rest of August, and it is the one summer night that sells at a premium. Decide early or pick a different week.

The short version

What it costs to leave it late

How much of our July and August was already booked by each date, averaged over five years.

Share of July and August nights already booked
By this dateAlready gone
1 January7%
1 February21%
1 March34%
1 April51%
1 May64%
1 June80%

By the first of May 64% has gone, by the first of June 80%. You will still find something. You will be choosing from what is left rather than from the calendar.

Where these numbers come from

Our own booking records for three self-catering places on the Lauterbrunnen valley floor, August 2021 to October 2026: 1,038 stays, 3,374 nights, 5 summers. Cancellations excluded. Nights are counted rather than bookings. Across 392 summer bookings the median was made 14.9 weeks ahead, and that figure has stayed in the same band every year.

It is one operator, not the whole valley. Hotels fill on a different curve, and Wengen or Mürren will not behave like the valley floor. We publish winter figures nowhere on this page because our own booking rules changed in 2025 and ours would mislead you.

Common questions

When to book, answered

How far in advance should I book accommodation in Lauterbrunnen?

For summer, about four months ahead: August by April, July by March, June by January. For May and October six weeks is usually enough, and from November to April a couple of weeks.

Is it too late to book Lauterbrunnen for this summer?

If it is May, about 64% of our July and August is already gone, so you will have less choice but you will find something. If it is June or July, ask what is free and build the trip around those dates rather than picking dates first.

When should I book for Lauterbrunnen in August?

By April. Half our August nights are gone about three and a half months out. Stays covering 1 August, Swiss National Day, book roughly a month earlier again and sell at a premium.

How far ahead should I book for the Lauberhorn races?

Much further than the rest of winter. Rooms covering the mid-January race week are booked around twice as far ahead as the rest of January, and some go a year out. Treat it like booking August.
