The Alpabzug, when decorated cattle are led down from the high summer pastures into the valley, flowers and big bells and all. Dates shift with the weather and can fall in late September or October, so it is never fixed far ahead, ask locally for the day.

Yes, for autumn colour and quiet. Early October still has open trails, golden larches and the Alpabzug cattle descents, with far fewer people than summer. By late October the season winds down: some lifts, hotels and restaurants begin closing and the weather turns, so check what is open before you go.
The Alpabzug (or Alpabfahrt) is the traditional descent of cattle from the high summer pastures, the animals decorated with flowers and large bells. It is a genuine working event rather than a show, so the exact date shifts with the weather and is often only set at short notice, anywhere from late September into October.
Increasingly so through the month. October is shoulder season, quiet and good value, especially later on as the valley heads toward the winter lull. The trade-off is shortening days and some closures as summer operations wind down.
