Come in by train to Lauterbrunnen, drop the bags and walk the flat, paved path along the valley floor. The Staubbach Falls drop almost 300 metres straight off the cliff behind the village, and the path past them is buggy-friendly and free. It is the cheapest hour in the valley and still the one people remember.

The cable car lifts you out of the village to Grütschalp, then a ridge train trundles along the cliff edge to car-free Mürren. Above it the Schilthorn tops out at 2,970 m with the revolving Piz Gloria restaurant. This is the quieter, higher, more dramatic side of the valley.

Ten glacier-fed waterfalls thunder through a gorge inside the cliff, reached by a lift and walkways cut into the rock. It is loud, cold and unlike anything else in the valley, and it works whatever the weather does. A short bus ride up the valley from the village.

The Wengen side, and as high as you want to go
A cog railway climbs from Lauterbrunnen to car-free Wengen and on to Kleine Scheidegg under the Eiger north face. From there you can carry on to the Jungfraujoch, or stay at Kleine Scheidegg and walk, which costs a fraction and puts you closer to the mountain.

Over to Grindelwald
Half an hour by train puts you in the next valley, under the other face of the Eiger. Grindelwald First, the Bachalpsee walk and Männlichen are all on this side, and Männlichen connects back over to Wengen so you can loop home rather than retrace.
