Plane or helicopter
The plane jump over Interlaken, the helicopter jump over this valley, and the scenic flight for people who would rather stay inside. What happens, who it is not for, and how to time it.
The most expensive thing you can do here, and for a lot of people the reason they came. You jump strapped to an instructor, fall for under a minute, then float down under canopy with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau in front of you. There are two ways up: a plane over Interlaken, or a helicopter, including one that hovers above this valley.
| Plane | Helicopter | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Over Interlaken and the lakes | Over Interlaken, or over the Lauterbrunnen valley |
| The exit | A run-and-roll from the aircraft door | A drop from a hovering helicopter, no slipstream |
| Cost | The cheaper of the two | Noticeably more |
| Best for | A first jump with the classic lake view | The once-in-a-lifetime version, over the valley you are staying in |

Operators meet you in Interlaken and take you to the take-off point. There is a short briefing and a harness fitting, then up you go. Your instructor does everything that matters: the exit, the canopy, the landing. Your job is to arch, breathe and look at the view. The whole thing takes about half a day including transport and waiting for your slot, with only a few minutes of it in the air.
Book your jump for the first or second day of your stay, and keep a later day free to move it to. If the jump is cancelled for weather you are rebooked or refunded, so the only cost of a cancellation is losing the jump itself, and only if you left no spare day. Mornings are usually steadier than afternoons in summer.
A scenic helicopter flight from Interlaken over the glaciers to the Jungfraujoch is the most spectacular hour you can spend here without jumping out of anything, and some flights land on the glacier. It needs the same clear weather, so the same booking advice applies.
